for missionaries? Today's missionaries, unlike the missionaries of 50 years ago, have been trained as specialists. Frequently life in a developing country demands that we have more of a generalist approach. We might need to address problems of water, sanitation, health, nutrition, etc. in order to present not only a gospel of words, but a demonstration and declaration of God's redemptive love. At A.T.I. we address the
why should we care, the what
should we do, and the how should we do it of missions. What will this do for me? A.T.I. will challenge you
from a Biblical perspective
on how you should respond to the felt needs of the people among whom
God
is calling you to minister. We will further teach you practical skills
to enable you to function in a developing society and skills you can
share
for the betterment of the people group you serve.
We will look at such basic needs as reconciliation with God and each other, food production, shelter, health, and education in recognition of the fact that God is calling us to proclaim the gospel which represents the whole love of God for the whole man. How long will it take and what is involved? The program at A.T.I. is made up of several modules which can be taken as one course or as separate units. While you may enroll in any time, we recommend that the full program will provide a well-rounded course of missionary training for new candidates. In regard to the question of what is involved, the modules with their courses of study offered at A.T.I. are as follows: Spiritual Formation runs
throughout the program. It includes:
Philosophy of Development and Conflict Resolution. Construction Technologies - 1 week offered in the spring & fall Includes: Welding,
Construction and Electrical Wiring.
Food Production - 2 weeks offered in the spring only Includes:
Plant Husbandry - irrigation, soil & plant
management, intensive gardening, farming systems and Animal Husbandry -
herd health, management, and product utilization.
Community Health Education (CHE) - 1 week offered in the spring & fall Includes: Biblical Basis of
Health, Relief vs. Development,
Community Assessment, Preparing Lessons, Integrating the Physical with
the Spiritual, How to set up a Community Health Program, and Human
Nutrition. Energy Efficient Shelter - 1 week offered in the fall You arrive on a remote
mission station to find that there
is unreliable power, inadequate sanitation, and the people around the
“neighborhood”
build with whatever they can find. If you are going into this
type
of situation, “Energy Efficient Shelter” is just
for you! Receive
hands-on experience building with straw bales and tires, and using
solar
power and wind. Cisterns, composting and indoor gardening are
also
covered. This course is for men and women alike and includes
outdoor
labs combined with classroom instruction and interesting group
interaction. Water Technologies You want to turn on a faucet and have water come out; you don’t want to know where it comes from. But on almost any continent you will visit, that is a luxury few experience. Clean water is a rare commodity, and in fact, many people around the world die of water-borne diseases. Here at Equip we’re seeking to find an answer to this worldwide problem. We offer two courses that can provide practical solutions in this much-needed area of ministry. In these courses
you will gain the experience
needed to provide clean, safe water for your family and even for your
village. The work will be challenging, but you will learn valuable
skills that will give new meaning to giving a drink of water in
Jesus’ name. During the
course you will receive instruction
in:
You will get hands-on experience setting up and
operating the LS-100 shallow well drilling rig. You will actually drill
a well, hit water, develop, case, and complete a well with a hand pump. You will also learn about
and use a simple hand auger method of producing a shallow well for use
where soils permit. Also,
how to implement a manual percussion drilling method using a system
that can penetrate rock. LS-100
The LS-100 and LS-200 are drilling rigs that were
developed by Lone Star Bit, Inc. of Stafford, TX for use by Living
Water International and Life Water International. The rig is small
enough to be carried in the back of a half-ton pick-up truck. The LS-100 and the LS-200
were developed specifically for mission application.
They produce a six (6) inch borehole 100 and 200
feet deep respectively through soft to medium rock formation. They are available from
Lone Star Bit. The
LS-200 operates in the same manner as the LS-100, with heavier
constructed parts allowing the driller to penetrate deeper. All the training on the
LS-100 is applicable to the LS-200.
During the class on drilling with the LS-100 you
will drill a well up to a depth of 100 feet and learn what constitutes
a good aquifer, how to set a casing, apply your gravel pack, make your
own screen, aquifer development, setting the pump, pulling the pump,
and proper abandoning of the well site. At the end of the first two
days, there is a relaxed evening session to review the events of the
day.
The fee includes a training manual, a training video, meals and accommodations. Your Equip instructors have been trained by Living Water International. For more information on the LS-100 and 200 the
following link is provided. http://www.lonestarbit.com/index.php?topgroupid=3
Hand Auger Produced Wells: We offer a simple method of producing shallow wells
in soft formations where water might be available at sixty feet or less. This method has been used
successfully and
works well coupled with the BioSand filter to ensure that potable water
is provided.
Percussion Drilled Wells: During your time at Equip, Inc. you will have the opportunity to learn a method of drilling developed hundreds of years ago by the Chinese. They have drilled wells through rock to depths of hundreds of feet. This method is labor and time intensive, but where capital is not available, and labor and time are, the percussion drill could be used to provide a good source of water. Upon completion of the course, the participant will receive instruction in the use of and plans for the construction of this simple rig. Water
Pump Systems Equip's
water pumping
systems course will provide students with hands-on training in the
operation of the most common hand pumps, simple electrical pumps and
gravity water systems found on most foreign mission fields.
Students will examine and discuss case studies regarding WASH
development in order to apply these lessons to their mission area.
Course Output
With
this one-week course
missionaries exposed to these concepts are better equipped to meet the
need for safe water in the mission field. Total cost for the
course is US$350.00.
WASH
Community Training
Improvements to water quality and supply are proven to be far more effective and sustainable when hygiene and sanitation behavior are also addressed. Diarrheal diseases are drastically reduced, in turn reducing the need for costly curative medicine and freeing up medical clinics for more serious illnesses. At Equip we see a need to offer churches a short-term program with long-lasting effects that can be easily carried out with church members to address the problems created by unsafe water supply and sanitation. WASH Community Training is a participatory training of trainers course combining practical WAter, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) science, community development principles and Biblical truths that equip both short-term and long-term missionaries with the practical knowledge and skills to address these problems. Course Output
There is no "one" solution to these problems as they are as diverse and varied as the people, cultures, geology and locations in which missionaries serve. Our Water Technologies What will it cost? It is the goal of A.T.I. to teach missionaries how to live a life-style of community, simplicity, and responsibility. Therefore, we try to keep the costs to a minimum. The courses are primarily offered at our North Carolina Training Center where we can control the cost. Participants invariably want to take advantage of our other resources such as our hard-to-find books, so bring your checkbook. A more specific break down of these costs is available upon request. What can I expect? You will live in somewhat spartan conditions. Couples will have their own dormitory room, and singles will have a shared dormitory room. There are twin beds in each room. There is a joint facility for showers. In the village, the only running water is in the community cook cabin and shower house. Your day will be composed of the following: chores (animal and village care), community meals prepared by you and the other trainees, classroom instruction, labs, and research projects.
We will not abandon you! We have an Integrated Human Services team to help you. If you have questions or research problems while on the field, you can contact us and we will do our best to help you with those problems, but we will even go further than that. You can arrange with us to have our I.H.S. team visit you for short or extended time periods on the field in order to get your projects going. |
